“Thanksgiving Adventure: A Delightful 4 Day Trip to Brussels and Maastricht”

I took to a Thanksgiving escapade that transcends borders! I think getting away from the US for Thanksgiving has become my new tradition. I took a quick 4-day trip to Brussels, Belgium. Well actually I stayed with a friend in the town of Zaventem, about a 20-minute train ride from Brussels.

Brussels, Belgium: A Thanksgiving Feast for the Senses

I took the train to Brussels Central train station which is just a quick walk from the Grand Place. The intricate architecture of the Town Hall and surrounding guildhalls, adorned with golden accents was a splendor to look at.  As they were getting ready for the Christmas market and season the atmosphere was very festive in the cobblestone square. The shops were all beautifully decorated and even though it was a bit cold and rainy, I didn’t mind as there were plenty of coffee shops to grab a hot drink.

Indulge in Belgian Delights:

No trip to Brussels is complete without indulging in the world-renowned Belgian chocolates< was told.  So, Like a good tourist I visited renowned chocolatiers Neuhaus and they did not disappoint (sorry no pics, I was too involved to remember to snap a pic). I ate way too much delightful pralines and truffles and if that wasn’t enough to satisfy my sweet tooth, I head to the The Waffle factory for an overload in whipped cream and Nutella. I was told I should try the moules Frites (mussels and fries) and beer but at that point I was tapped out on junk food and decided to just explore and do so shopping. I ended up walking to Brussel Nord trains station and headed back to Zaventem as I got in that day at 9AM and was super tired by 6:00PM.

The Trip to Ghent

I started the day wanting to go to Brogues but as it was raining and cold, I settled on Ghent. Ghent was very beautiful and full of young people, who were very kind and helpful in explaining to me how to get on the tram to get to the city center. I got some very delicious apple pastry and visited one of the coolest Starbucks I had ever seen. I must say, many stores did not accept American Express, so if you are like me and not wanting to use your debit card or carry cash, make sure to have a Mastercard or Visa credit card.

Day Trip to Maastricht, Netherlands: A Whimsical Interlude

I hopped on the train to Maastricht on day 3, it was a scenic train journey from Brussels Nord to Maastricht. The ride was approximately 1.5-hour ride with picturesque views of the Dutch countryside. The train was very comfortable and one of the highlights was the 2 elderly men who seemed to have a bit too much to drink. Yelling in French and got into a bit of a scuffle. If you like to travel on a budget as I do this is a good way to get a around and across borders. Just be sure to get your ticket online and download it to have easy access for when the conductor come around to check. Also, don’t make the same mistake I did in getting off at Maastricht University which is one stop before the city center.

Discover Maastricht’s Old Town:

As I stepped into the charming streets of Maastricht’s Old Town I was wowed by the historic architecture, and the delightful ambiance of Vrijthof Square. The city’s rich history is reflected in its medieval buildings, churches, and quaint shops (just be sure to have Visa or Master card). What a beautiful place, I have decided I must visit again in the Summer. Also, be sure to visit the book store in the picture on the right above, it amazing.

Relax by the Maas River:

I wrapped up my day in Maastricht with a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Maas River. There are many coffeeshops and restaurants that boasts scenic views. Do stop for a coffee at a one of these waterfront cafés, and reflect on the cultural riches as I did while experiencing this charming Dutch city.

Overall: As the day draws to a close, I found yourself filled with gratitude for the enriching experiences and cultural treasures discovered in Brussels and Maastricht. This Thanksgiving adventure was a feast for the senses, blending the warmth of the holiday season with the magic of European exploration. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or a wanderer at heart, this journey is sure to leave you with cherished memories to be thankful for. I am thank you for you my readers, my family and friends.
